Riv Business Finder
The Brief
This case study explores the development of the Riv Business Finder, a comprehensive online business directory. This project, built with PHP, MYSQL and JavaScript using the Zurb Foundation framework for responsive design & layout, stands as the most complex undertaking I've worked on to date, highlighted by the integration of an eCommerce payment gateway called SecurePay.
The core objective was to create a robust and user-friendly online directory that would connect businesses with potential customers. The brief demanded a platform that was:
- Comprehensive: Capable of listing a wide range of businesses across various industries and locations.
- Searchable & Filterable: Allowing users to easily find businesses based on keywords, location, category, and other relevant criteria.
- User-Friendly: Intuitive and easy to navigate for both business owners and customers searching for services.
- Scalable: Designed to accommodate future growth and increasing traffic.
- Secure: Protecting user data and facilitating secure online transactions.
- Monetizable: Enabling businesses to enhance their listings through paid subscriptions and advertising. This functionality needed to integrate with a secure payment gateway.
Ultimately, the Riv Business Finder aimed to be a definitive resource for finding local businesses, offering a valuable platform for both consumers and business owners.
The Solution
To address the brief, a multi-faceted solution was developed using PHP and JavaScript, leveraging the strengths of these technologies to deliver a powerful and engaging user experience. The key features implemented included:
- Advanced Search & Filtering: A powerful search engine allowed users to quickly find businesses based on various criteria, including keyword search, location-based filtering, category selection, tags and specific attributes.
- Interactive Map Integration: Integration with Google Maps allowed users to visualise business locations and find businesses within a specific geographic area.
- User Reviews and Ratings: Users could rate and review businesses, providing valuable feedback and helping others make informed decisions.
- Secure: SSL certificate to secure payment transactions and a strong data privacy and security policies.
- eCommerce Integration with SecurePay: The most challenging aspect of the project was the integration of the SecurePay payment gateway. This allowed businesses to subscribe to premium listing packages and purchase advertising space, generating revenue for the platform. The integration was implemented with rigorous security measures to protect sensitive payment information.
- Responsive Design: The website was designed to be fully responsive, ensuring optimal viewing and usability across all devices, including desktops, tablets, and smartphones.
Riv Business Finder, with its comprehensive features and secure payment gateway, ultimately provided a powerful and successful solution for connecting businesses with customers. The project's complexity pushed the boundaries of my development skills and resulted in a robust and scalable online business directory.
